2 Days on 2 Wheels, 138 miles of Bike Therapy! Part 1

Ever since I spent a day on the Great Allegheny Passage just outside of Pittsburgh I have thought a lot about bike touring, particularly on Rails-To-Trails type destinations and in particular more of that great landmark.   I have been yearning to spend days out on my bike exploring the country via two wheels.

Well Pittsburgh is a bit of a drive and so is Cumberland, MD at the other end of the trail.  Plus the surface of that trail is mostly crushed limestone, not the most suitable for my dear Cessna (aka my Scott Contessa road bike).  So I started looking into closer options.  I had never been on an overnight on my bike and decided I needed to find somewhere to start.  Looking around on the great internet I found it!  The Silver Comet trail!  It starts in Smyrna, GA just outside of Atlanta and runs to the Alabama state line then connects with the Chief Lagida trail and continues to Anniston, AL.  The whole length of the two being about 100 miles.  Perfect!

Now I needed to do some planning and a little bit of training.  I have never had to carry much of a load when I rode before, nonetheless to plan on carrying a load for many many miles.  So I started researching everything I could about these trails and got to work on prepping my bike for a trip.

I didn’t have any money to spend on gear so I went with what I had.  I took the rack off my commuter and with my trunk bag and one pannier (yes I only have one….working on my Christmas wish list now) started thinking about what I really needed to bring.  I started riding with the added load and found hills to be a definite challenge!  Thankfully the trip I was planning had minimal hills, although one section of some good hills but other than that pretty flat,  nice change from home!

So the longest distance I had ridden up to this trip was 52.5 miles and yet I was planning two days of about 65 miles each day.  My 52.5 mile trip had been on the Blue Ridge Parkway climbing up towards Mt. Pisgah and this trip was pretty unexciting as far as elevations were concerned.  I figured I needed to challenge myself but not do anything too stupid so it seemed reasonable.  Still it was a little daunting planning a trip in which I exceeded my top ever mileage, not one, but two days in a row!

Oh and I don’t think I have mentioned yet but I was planning this trip as a solo excursion.  Feel free to give me all that “safety in numbers” stuff and whatever but I am a risk taker.  It is a big part of my personality.  Independence and stubbornness are part of my personality too.  Qualities I  quite like in myself.  I have been on a bit of solo trip quest for the last year and a half.  I find it rewarding and a bit of therapy for me so it makes sense that riding my bike, which I already consider therapy  coupled with a solo trip would be something I desired.

I definitely was getting excited, a little anxious, a little nervous and could not wait for this trip!  I needed the time away from my normal world and I needed some quality time alone with Cessna.  Ahhhh…life is good.

Stay tuned for part 2 but here is a song that came on my Ipod while riding and being a Beck fan and my mood at the moment this song was ideal.

Beck Go It Alone

Mush

Long week and my brain has turned to mush.  Looking more so to giving my brain a needed break more than anything else this weekend!  Anyway, last workday of the week and I don’t want to think so here’s a Beck tune for you!

I Hear The Weekend Calling!

It’s Friday!!!  I have some fun things planned and will be pretty excited as soon as I punch that time clock at the end of today!  The first Downtown After Five tonight and then AlleyQuest with the Asheville Pedal Punks.  Bike riding, beer drinking and lots of friends!!!  I may be a little productive in between but who cares, it will be an awesome weekend!

It has been awhile since I played you a Beck tune so I am long overdue.  Enjoy!

Early Friday Post

Well tomorrow is Friday.  It has so far been one long exhausting week in my new role as head of my department at work.  Can you believe they let me be in charge of other people?  Anyway, it’s good to move up the ranks but I really wish it had not coincided with the beginning of our busy season.  Well the pressure has been on and so far I think I have done pretty well with keeping my cool.  It will settle into a pattern and I think the pressure will cool off and life will be good.

Here’s to Friday, the last day of my first official week as boss.

I Can Taste the Weekend

It’s Friday and despite a lack of sleep I’m looking forward to a good night and weekend!  So I think I will celebrate this morning with a Beck tune to get me motivated.  Let’s just hope the work day goes smooth and quickly!

Music Medicine

I’m trying to keep my spirits high, trying to look at the positive of things but I can’t seem to shake this feeling in me.  I have a solid case of the wintertime blues. Knowing in less than a week I will have surgery, feeling a little alone and it being my least favorite season has brought me down.  I’m still going to do my best to ignore my inner thoughts and hope for better ones to take over, after all why waste my mind’s energy on the negative?  Somehow I just can’t shake it.

Feeling a little blue almost always makes me turn to some Beck tunes and I found this fantastic song on youtube so enjoy.  It helped make my morning a little brighter as will the bike ride I do a little later.

Reminded

I’m trying to have a friendship with my “long-term” ex as overall he has his good points and there are things I miss about him.  Well tonight I went over to his house for a couple of drinks and listened to him talk about his new girlfriend and he did a few things that reminded me of why it ended to begin with.  This song was the first song to come on in my cd player (I have one of them old school cars with no mp3 plug-in, it even takes cassettes too!) and this song said exactly what I was feeling.  In case you can’t tell Beck is my absolute favorite.  There is always a song to fit my mood or thoughts.

Morning Melancholy

Feeling a little down this morning.  A  lot on my mind.  Nothing really bad just too many things.  I’m missing certain people and feeling a little detached from myself right now.  Lying awake for a couple of hours in the middle of the night doesn’t help.  Thankfully tomorrow is Friday and I have plans to catch up with friends at Downtown After Five.  Hopefully this weekend will be productive, fun and help me get my head straight.

Anyway, I almost always turn to Beck’s Sea Change when I’m a little down.  So here’s a tune for my morning melancholy.

It Makes Me Happy

It makes me happy when I run into random friends that tell me they are reading my blog.  I guess that officially makes me a better than crappy author.  Multiple people have mentioned they follow my blog which means that they have read it more than once, right?!?  I guess I’m famous!  Haha, well anyways it’s Sunday night I had a good ride with my favorite Asheville Social Ride group, The Asheville Pedal Punks (http://ashevillepedalpunks.blogspot.com/), ran into several other friends and well overall it has been a pretty good day.  Bikes, friends, beer, some productivity, hell yes!

I also wanted to mention to the local folks that The Altamont Brewing Company (http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Altamont-Brewing-Company/175609402477826) has a fundraiser each month and a dollar for each fundraiser pint goes to the non-profit of the month.  Well guess what!  Pisgah Area SORBA is the fundraiser this month!  So if you are in Asheville get yourself a beer at The Altamont Brewing Company and support Pisgah Area SORBA!  Tell them I sent you 🙂

Also I found another cd for my Beck collection, Guerolito, so here’s a tune I was diggin’ earlier.

It’s Monday, So What?

Yeah, it’s Monday.  I have a full week of work ahead of me but you know what?  We all need a paycheck and otherwise life is good.  So pour yourself another cup of coffee and get your groove on.  It’s only work and later today you can go back home pour yourself a beer, ride your bike, take the dog for a walk, watch a movie, or whatever it is that makes you happy.  So enjoy this Monday. make it a good one for a change.
